My sister caught polio.
at a summer camp.
She was in a hospital
almost in the Bronx.

I had our bedroom all to myself.
I read my sister’s diary,
Only because she had read mine.

By September I felt scared, imagining her
in an iron lung, like in the movies.
My class drew pictures for her.
I became popular.

She came home before Thanksgiving.
You’d never know she had polio,
not even a limp I could
show off to my friends.
